Wolf Moon Slots

Wolf Moon slots are online slot games produced by Amatic Industries.

Amatic is a regional leader in casino game design for the European market. They've been producing games for select Euro markets for the better part of two decades. Unfortunately for Amatic, they entered the Internet gambling market in 2011, when it was an already-saturated market. With companies like Betsoft, NetEnt, and RTG producing gorgeous games for over a decade, Amatic has an uphill climb if they want to compete on the global stage.

Introduction to Wolf Moon

Wolf Moon is a five reel online slot with four rows of reel symbols. The game allows wagers on units of ten, twenty, thirty, or forty pay lines. Players can wager between one and seventy-five credits per line, for a total wager range from 1 to 3,000 units per spin. Since this is a penny slot, your actual bet-per-spin can range from $0.10 up to $30. On Amatic's Wolf Moon slot, a max bet is any credit amount applied to all forty lines. That means you can technically place a max bet of just $0.40 per spin, though you'll miss out a little on the game's wager multiplier opportunities with a bet that low.

Game Theme

Wolf Moon's theme is difficult to pin down. We'd be foolish not to admit right up front that it looks like a rip-off of the classic Kevin Costner film Dances with Wolves. There's even a white man with a beard in military uniform that acts as the game's main character. We have to say he looks decidedly similar to Mr. Costner. This similarity is carried out in the game's other symbols – wolves, totems, and wind-swept frontier land. Amatic hasn't released a licensed online slot yet – could Wolf Moon slots be their first go at developing branded games?

If so, it's a weak attempt. The game's plot is non-existent, it includes very few special features, and even the payouts are on the disappointing end of the spectrum.

Payout Schedule

We noticed a funny detail about Wolf Moon's payout schedule – winning the top prize may not always be as lucrative as winning the second most valuable payout. Here's why: the top fixed jackpot is worth 10,000 credits, triggered by spinning five of the game's wild symbols on an active line. The next-highest payout is worth 8,000 credits, but since that payout is triggered by spinning five bonus symbols, you get free spins as well as a chance at a multiplier. Technically it could be more lucrative than the top prize.

Actually, because of the game's gamble feature, one or two other low payouts could be increased at least to the value of the game's top prize.

Gamble Feature

Wolf Moon slots include a gamble feature. As far as we can tell, this is a feature common to all online Amatic slots, and most of their land-based ones. Every payout is eligible for a simple gamble option – choose the color of the next card out of a simulated playing card deck, and you win double the payout. Because of this feature, a payout of 4,000 credits (for the game's fourth-largest payout) automatically becomes equal to its second-largest.

Game Symbols

Below is a quick guide to all the symbols using in Amatic's Wolf Moon online slot machines:

  • Wild Symbol

A howling moon silhouetted against the game's titular moon.

  • Bonus Symbol

    A traditional Native American dreamcatcher.

  • Wolf

The face of a noble and gorgeous wolf.

  • Totems

    Three different intricately-carved totem poles.

  • Soldier

The white-faced soldier referred to earlier; obviously a Kevin Costner rip-off.

  • Playing Card Symbols

The traditional colored playing card symbols, the game's least-valuable.

Bonus Rounds and Special Features

If you spin three, four, or five Dreamcatcher symbols on an active line, you'll trigger the game's only special feature – a free spins bonus round that also occasionally pays out a wager multiplier. There's no game to this bonus – once triggered, the game pays you up to five free spins and, randomly, a 10x wager multiplier. These free spins can be re-triggered.

Summary

This was not one of our favorite Amatic titles.

For starters, you don't have much choice in terms of your wager. Sure, the maximum bet range is really low, so it's a good game for people with low to medium bankrolls. But with just four line arrangements to wager on, it's not exactly an advantage gambler's dream. Another issue – there's no plot. Amatic doesn't always produce slow-paced plot-free titles like this. Wolf Moon is literally a spin and wait game, punctuated only by the occasional free spins round or sweet double win on the gamble feature.

Wolf Moon's dual-function bonus symbol is the only reason to even consider giving Wolf Moon more than a passing glance. If Amatic is considering licensing games to produce online slots, they should look to companies like Betsoft for inspiration. All the major slot designers are getting into the licensed slot game. Amatic's half-hearted attempt here to create a slot that references a twenty-five year old movie falls flat.
