Jurassic Park is based on a 1990 novel by Michael Crichton. Genetic science had seen significant advances in the previous decade. Those advances were significant enough they spawned a great deal of speculative science. It was almost inevitable that these theories would lead to speculative fiction like Jurassic Park.

In Michael Creighton's novel, scientists were able to clone the dinosaurs from the DNA in ancient fossils. Crichton said he envisioned the novel as early as 1983, but the original story involved a student who recreated dinosaurs. He eventually decided the process would be expensive and a rational student would have no reason to make a dinosaur, so he chose to make it an entertainment venture by a billionaire.

The original manuscripts were narrated by a child, but Michael Crichton claimed "everybody" who read the first drafts suggested the story would be better told by an adult, given the technical details to be explained. Before the Jurassic Park novel was published, Universal Studios had bought the movie rights.

Michael Crichton wrote a second Jurassic Park novel, "The Lost World", in 1995. The collected novels were published in 1997 as Michael Crichton's "Jurassic World".

Steven Spielberg's Movie

In 1993, Steven Spielberg released the film Jurassic Park. The film was about an eccentric billionaire who wanted to build a theme park on the fictional island of Isla Nublar. Isla Nublar is located off the Pacific coast of the Central American nation of Costa Rica. The billionaire used cutting edge genetic science to clone dinosaurs. The dinosaur DNA was taken from mosquitos which had sucked the blood of dinosaurs, and then been preserved for millions of years in amber.

After one of the dinosaurs kills a worker, investors (working through a lawyer) send a team of scientists to the island to approve continued work. These scientists are the protagonists of the movie, and are played by Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. In a contrived way, children are placed on this isolated, dangerous island. Inevitably, the dinosaurs rampage, threatening all involved.

The combination of CGI animations from Industrial Light & Magic and Stan Winston's animatronic dinosaurs dazzled and thrilled audiences. The movie was a hit with children and adults, and set records by generating $900 million in ticket sales.

The film was followed by three commercially successful sequels: The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), and Jurassic World (2015). Industry sources note that a yet-unnamed fifth installment is set for release in 2018.

Jurassic Park Slots from IGT

International Game Technology based its licensed slot machine on the original Jurassic Park movie from 1993. IGT released the brick-and-mortar version at the 2013 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas.
